The only other time that GMB held its Congress in Plymouth was in 1892. The GMB’s flagship event will bring over 500 delegates and 500 visitors to the City. The GMB Congress 2008 will have a many VIP politicians, speakers and guests. The 1,000 delegates and visitors will assemble to set the Union’s policies for the future. When they are not in session they will use the City’s hotels, restaurants and attractions throughout the week.

Plymouth beat other contenders such as Brighton, Liverpool, Cardiff and Belfast to get the prestigious trade union event.

Richard Ascough, GMB Regional Secretary said, “GMB’s loyal membership in the region have wanted the Unionto visit the South West. Now with the help of the City council delegates from all over Britain will be able to see the extent to which Plymouth has changed and developed.

GMB Congress is a high profile media event and like the Labour Party conference in Manchester earlier this year will be good for the profile of Plymouth and the region.”
